Cheese Twist Scones

Here's another recipe from the archives of my Mum's Little Red Recipe Book. My mum grew up on a farm, and I'm sure there would have been a lot of home baking done, along with ingredients being readily available. I would categorise this recipe as farm style baking as it's not particularly healthy, but a comforting, tasty treat. Especially on a cold, wet, windy (Wellington) day with a nice hot cup of tea! 

I have called them scones to avoid confusion with possibly a similar named baked item "Cheese Straws". I believe Cheese Straws are made of pastry, but these Cheese Twists are definitely more scone-like in flavour and texture. 

They're really quick to whip up and will make around 20 depending on size. They also freeze pretty well too. For the purposes of this blog post I have made mine quite square and even, but usually they would be a bit more twisted and have more of an organic shape! 

Cheese Twists


100g Butter
¾ cup cheese
1 Tbsp sugar
2 ¼ cup self-raising flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup milk 


Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees Celsius. 

Mix the dry ingredient in a bowl, sift them in if you prefer

Work together with milk using a knife until the mixture is dough like

Knead slightly and roll out on a floured surface until approx 1cm thickness

Cut into strips 10cm x 2cm, twist each strip a couple of times

Melt butter in a baking dish in the oven

Lay the twists in the melted butter 

Bake at in the oven for approx 15 minutes or until golden on both sides, turning once. 

Cool on a baking tray covered in paper towels.

Best enjoyed warm from the oven with a cuppa!
